Stitching Stillness: Geometry as Quiet Expression

In the gentle rhythm of counted stitch, structure becomes serenity. These six patterns—each composed of four 17×17 count motifs—invite you to explore the quiet elegance of symmetry, repetition, and color. They are not just designs, but meditative spaces where thread meets intention.

Each motif measures approximately 2.5 cm when stitched on 18-count Aida, making them ideal for small compositions, modular arrangements, or delicate embellishments. Though designed for single-color stitching, the creative freedom is yours: choose any thread shade and pair it with a fabric that enhances its mood. A deep green on white evokes clarity, while black on natural linen whispers tradition. The combinations are endless—and deeply personal.

These patterns are versatile in scale and form. By adjusting fabric count or combining multiple motifs, you can create larger works that retain their refined geometry. Whether used for ornaments, framed pieces, or textile accents, each design offers a quiet canvas for your imagination.

Technique matters: ensure that the top thread of each cross stitch slants consistently when viewed from the front. This small discipline brings cohesion and polish to your finished work. Let your needle move with care, and allow each stitch to reflect your rhythm.

You are welcome to sell the finished pieces made from these free designs. We encourage you to adapt, combine, and transform them into original creations that speak with your own voice.

Counted Stitch Pattern    sq22

I tried to create a slightly futuristic, linear design. Traditional designs with motifs of flowers and plants are nice, but sometimes something simple like this can be refreshing!

It is great for small items such as coasters and bookmarks, but is also recommended for edging bags and clothing.

   Counted Stitch Pattern   sq17

This design features a dynamic combination of straight lines. The dense stitching creates a heavy finish, so you may need to be careful with your color selection.

It is great for small items such as coasters and bookmarks, but is also recommended for edging bags and clothing.

This design also features linear lines. Because it's a bit unusual, it's a great idea to use it on small items like a logo. Alternatively, surround the entire design with a straight line to separate the motif and create a different impression.

It's perfect for coasters, kitchen towels, and even decorating tote bags.

  Counted Stitch Pattern  sq19

This design combines a square and a cross. Because it has a linear motif, it can easily be fashioned into decorative lines.

Recommended for kitchen cloths, table centers, and coasters.

This was originally created as a pattern for Perler Beads. If you use 5mm beads, you can make a coaster that is about 8cm in size.

As you can see from this sample image, just changing the color can give a cute finish to a straight-line design.
Counted stitches have many straight lines and few diagonal stitches, so they can be completed relatively quickly.

When combining motifs, changing the direction will give you more options for arrangement. You can also use a different thread color for each motif.

This sample image is intentionally monotone, but if you use bright colors, the design can also look like a flower.

It's easy to arrange it by filling just the inside of the motif with a different color of thread, so if you use just the center design
and stitch it evenly spaced apart, you'll get a completely different impression.
